The house

A raised house with a front porch, a short walk from downtown Napa. It's furnished in RH-style wine country pieces: leather, reclaimed wood and deep blue walls under white beadboard ceilings. The kitchen is fully stocked, with a professional gas range, marble countertops and a farmhouse sink. The house runs on solar power with battery backup, and high-speed fiber Wi-Fi is fast enough for video calls all day.

There's a bedroom and bathroom on each floor. The main-floor bath has a clawfoot tub and shower. The upstairs bedroom sits under a vaulted ceiling, with a walk-in shower next door. It's ideal for professionals and families who want a real home for a month or more.

This is an owner-occupied property. The owner lives in a separate dwelling in the back, so help is close by if you need it.

A little history

Built in 1868, this was the first house on the block, back when Brown Street was still called Grant Avenue. The street was later renamed for Henry Brown, one of Napa's Victorian-era builders.

It's an I-house, a classic 19th-century farmhouse form, typically two stories tall and a single room deep. The name comes from how common the style was in Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. From the 1940s into the 1970s, the barn out back was home to the National Rug Co.

After years standing empty, the house was rebuilt from the foundation up in 2013. The original beadboard ceilings and fir floors were saved and refinished. A few doors down, the 1885 Capt. N. H. Wulff House, built for one of Napa's river steamboat captains, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The neighborhood

Brown Street runs through Old Town Napa, a neighborhood of historic homes and tree-lined streets. Downtown's restaurants, tasting rooms, coffee and the riverfront are a walk away, and the valley's wineries are a short drive.
